Montreal’s Italian Festival
Why Montreal’s Italian Festival? During the nineteenth century, Montreal has grown significantly both economically and demographically.
This growth can be attributed to the industrial revolution and access to Montreal’s metropolitan status.
This industrialization requires a large workforce that is provided in part by immigration. Montreal City, especially welcomes newcomers from Eastern Europe and South America, most notably Italian immigrants in the late nineteenth century.
The motivations of these Italians to leave their country were primarily economic. Their situation was difficult at home, and they hoped to make a fortune in the New World.
In the early twentieth century, Italian immigration to Montreal was an important phenomenon, and a community developed on its urban territory. Subsequently, after the Second World War, a third wave of Italian immigrants became integrated into the neighborhood of Little Italy.
Montreal’s Italian Festival – For a week in 2012, everyone is Italian

Performances are held at the Mirella and Lino Saputo Theatre at Centre Leonardo da Vinci. The Little Italy neighborhood presents flavors, perfumes, and spices of Italy.
No activity devoted to the Italian culture can not do without the opulence of its wines and its cuisine, but Montreal’s Italian Week also features a number of talented musical performances, fashion shows, performance comedies, and a sublime opera (imagine a festival without Italian opera?). If your travel agent tells you that it’s possible, get rid of him! Come explore other facets of Italian culture, full of intensity and passion.
Montreal’s Italian Week, which takes place every year in August, is a festival that honors the beauty and diversity of Italy, but it also helps to expose Italy’s musical, artistic, traditional italian food and folk atmosphere to the rest the world.
Many activities are offered: opera, fashion shows, Parkway dream Ferrari, literary events, art exhibitions, tastings, and guided historical tours.

Transmit its culture
Over the years, what began as a small gathering involving only the Italian community, has now become a major event throughout this town.
The largest wave of Italian immigration took place in Quebec after World War II. It is interesting to see the evolution of our community since that time.
There is a high transmission of culture among Italian families in Quebec.
Children of the fourth generation are often expressed very well in Italian and are proud of their roots.
The Montreal Italian Festival is an opportunity for us to share that wealth with the rest of the population and enhance our relationship with the Montreal community.
What do we think when we talk about the Italians? Italian cuisine, now universal, is probably the first thing that comes to mind.
Then there is the Italian language, whether singing or joie de vivre and its proverbial speakers. However, we too often forget the opera. Yet!
For the 19th consecutive year, the Italian Festival Week was held in different districts of the metropolis. From August 10 to 19, the public has enjoyed an eclectic mix of free and paid activities honoring the culture of this region of Europe.
The event had a special character this year, because 2011 was scoring the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.
In the neighborhood of Little Italy, Saint-Laurent Street was closed to traffic and given the opportunity to host several major events, including a fashion show and opera.
